The study of global R&D and innovation performance—The example of Taiwanese MNEs / 台灣多國籍企業海外研發與創新績效議題之研究

碩士 / 國立中正大學 / 企業管理所 / 96 / With the globalization of economy, many corporations begin to extend their operation to overseas countries and make good use of location-specific advantages to let the operation more efficient. Recently, the Taiwanese multinational enterprises (MNEs) increase their proportion of foreign direct investment in global R&D. To gain much innovative knowledge resources outside the parent country, Taiwanese companies have to globalize their R&D sites to maintain their competitive position and acquire the R&D results. Due to the spillover effect of R&D results, it will not only good to parent company but also benefit the subsidiaries by the technology diffusion. Establishing the network of global R&D sites makes the MNEs develop their products and technology to global market more rapid, however, it is important to consider how to manage the global R&D sites in an efficient way that the MNEs could make operation more efficient and flexible. Besides, when MNEs layout their global R&D sites, what the motivation they take into consideration is also an important issue.
Comparing with developed countries, global R&D activities in Taiwan is still evolving. In order to understand this complicated issue more deeply, I used case study approach. I selected the cases which had the complete global R&D activities, and interviewed the senior managers who had the experiences to gather the related materials. Besides, secondary material also provides more information to comprehend my sample cases.
According to the research, I can find out that when MNEs are conducting oversea R&D activities, the different patterns of R&D sites they set up are based on the current distinct motivations at the outset of the R&D activities. Besides, the ways parent companies in Taiwan manage oversea R&D sites will influence the patterns in which the sites are constructed. Diversified management mechanisms not only help parent companies be aware of the progress overseas but also allow the internal transmissions of knowledge and accomplishment in the organization and thus stimulate the power of innovation. Finally, due to the different objectives among oversea R&D sites parent companies in Taiwan will build up different innovation performance indicators and innovation patterns.
