Between isolation and belonging: A Life History Study of two off-shore island teachers’ ethnic experiences and the idea of multicultural education / 孤懸與歸屬-兩位離島教育夢想家族群經驗與多元文化教育理念之生命史研究

碩士 / 國立中正大學 / 教育研究所 / 96 / In the last decade, there has been considerable interest in off-shore areas. However, off-shore island teachers’ ethnic experiences and the the idea of multicultural education is an area that is under-reached and under-discussed. Therefore, the aim of this study attempts to explore two off-shore island teachers’ ethnic identity processes, ethnic relationship, and concepts of multicultural education form their life experiences. The participants in this study were one high school teacher and one elementary school teacher from Lanyu. This paper employed narrative analysis of their life history, observation and document analysis.
The results of this study showed the focus of ethnic self-identification has shifted from an emphasis on ancestry, language, origin to attention to self-determination of individuals and the geographical boundary is closely relation to the exposedness and hiding of the ethnicity, as well as probable a cause of ethnic self-identification. Besides, the concept of the ethnic awareness is determined by differences and relativity, arising from oppressed experiences of minority groups. The ethnic hierarchy and ethnic boundary in Taiwan are likely attributed to ethnic population, politics, economy, region, and time. Despite the pursuit of equal ethnic relationship, politics and educational system still linger in assimilation and pluralism. The majority groups play the leading role of the knowledge and value developing in textbook. In addition, schools also face the paradox of cultural conservation and innovation. To conclude, this study provides suggestions of rethinking the proposition of “empowerment” with compatible views and emphasizing the diversity of ethnic life styles and environment, especially textbooks. In the same vein, majority group should open channels for cross-cultural communication to create a friendly society. Further work will hopefully explore different ethnic teachers’ life history to examine and polish the idea of multicultural education.
