Differences in diatom community between artificial and natural hard substrates on the coast of Taiwan / 台灣沿岸附生矽藻群集在人工與天然硬基質上的差異

碩士 / 國立中興大學 / 生命科學系所 / 96 / The percentage of artificial coasts on Taiwan is over 49%, which may pose a significant threat to coastal ecosystems. Diatoms are important primary producers in the intertidal zone. They can be bio-indicators for environmental changes. However, there is little information on tropical coastal ecosystems. It is imperative to determine the effects of artificial substrate on diatom communities on the artificial coasts.
In order to study the effects of substrates, regions, and time on diatom abundance and the communities, diatoms were collected respectively from natural rocks and wave-breakers at 8 study sites in northern, western, eastern, and southern Taiwan. The results showed that there was a significant interactive effect of region and time on diatom chlorophyll a concentrations, but no significant and consistent substrate effect was detected. There were significant interactive effects of substrate, region, and time on diatom species number. There was also a significant interactive effect of region and time on diatom diversity, and diatom diversity indices were higher on natural substrates than on artificial substrates. Analyses of Cluster and MDS(multi-dimensional scaling)showed that time effect was more significant than those of region and substrate. In conclusion, the greater the scale was, the more significant on diatom communities was. Time has the most significant effect, followed by region and then substrate.
