碩士 / 國立成功大學 / 海洋科技與事務研究所 / 96 / Due to the global warming and growing population, land and food supply are now unable to meet the demand. Over capturing of marine species has led to low ability of regenerating natural resources, hence the development of ocean, instead of land, is a world trend. Aqua-species have traits of high growth and high feed conversion rate. Having to implement these qualities, marine cage aquaculture has become the measure to the scarce of land and food supply.
This paper is aimed to illustrate the developments of cage culture in Taiwan following literature analysis. Learning the pros and cons of promoting cage aquaculture worldwide, an evaluation has been done for the development of such industry in Taiwan. Ocean environments has been of a major influence in the production line, together with high risk of the costly investment and unorganized management, cage aquaculture in Taiwan has come to a standstill.
A theory of ‘sustainable development’ has been proposed to meet the problems.
To integrate the marine database completely, and the usage of GIS and communication with the residents in order to formulate the site of cage aquaculture industry. To define laws and regulations concerning mariculture industry. To encourage cage aquaculture industry development with automation, enterprise and technology. To emphasize the importance of cooperating the industries, academics and government agencies in Taiwan.
This paper is to provide a reference for the future development of aquaculture industry in Taiwan.
