Aqueous extracts from 86 marine macroalgae species (25
Chlorophyceae, 19 Phaeophyceae, 42 Rhodophyceae) from the coasts of
Taiwan were evaluated for antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity was
measured with the Ferrous-reducing power, Ferrous ion chelating activity,
DPPH radical-scavenging activity, Superoxide anion radical-scavenging
activity, and the total phenolic content of each extract were also evaluated
by Folin–Ciocalteu method. Among them, the extract of Sargassum
cristaefolium, Turbinaria conoides, Zonaria diesingiana, Acanthophora
spicifera, Carpopeltis maillardii, Osmundaria obtusiloba, exhibited strong
antioxidant activity. Highly positive relationships between reducing power
and total phenolic content in brown algae (R2 = 0.8684); another positive
relationships between ferrous ion chelating activity and total phenolic
content in green algae (R2 = 0.885). The higher antioxidant activity of red
algae and brown algae in ferrous ion chelating and radical-scavenging
(DPPH, superoxide anion) resulted in the richness of polysaccharides
(carrageenan, agar, alginate, fucoidan).
Key words: marine algae, antioxidant activity, total phenol
