The Creation Case Study Analysis of Graphic Symbols Applied in Poster Design / 圖像符號在海報設計中之創作實例分析

碩士 / 國立嘉義大學 / 視覺藝術研究所 / 96 / The graphic symbols in poster design play a significant key to the success of the artworks. If the visual graphic symbols are utilized appropriately in the artworks, the visual graphic symbols will not only fully express the meaning of the artwork respectively, but also relatively interpret the inner spirit of it. Thus, the study attempts to understand how designers select, utilize, and organize the graphic symbols through ones’ applications and structures to develop the meaning of graphic symbols which can result in an accurate and effective application.
Conducted through the semi-structured in-depth interviews with professional designers, this study first analyzes the origin of their application and development of graphic symbols, and then further discusses the interaction and relationship between graphic symbols and their meaning on a basis of the conception of (Ferdinand de) Saussure. The findings of this study are the following:
1. In addition to personal preferences on the styles and fulfillment in the fundamental sense of aesthetics, designers will also be influenced by recipients’ level of understanding, consumers’ habit, and magnetic power of graphic forms when applying and selecting graphic symbols.
2. Designers who convey conception through transformative meaning of graphic symbols will need to consider if the content is acceptable to the public or certain designated groups.
3. From the development perspective of graphic symbol meaning, the considerations of progress and design when designers developing the graphic symbols includes the design motivation , ones’ professional capacity, and experienced knowledge at the earlier development stage as to the applicability of graphic forms and expressional forms, and the influence of depth of expression. Designers integrate all the above factors into appropriate graphic symbols for readers.
4.The theory of semiotics and design practice creation expression are neither contrary nor conflict with each other, but the combination of both can transform or compose meanings into more complete visual statements through the symbolic development theory of (Ferdinand de) Saussure and transformative conception of symbols.
