碩士 / 南華大學 / 生死學研究所 / 96 / As the life expectancy prolonged, the numbers of the elderly population increased, and there is the tendency to have lesser children at present. The senile dementia will become the medical and social problems, which need the government to attach the great importance to it. It will be the front burner of our society for how to enable the caregivers to understand and respect the elderly dementia, and furthermore to minimize their problematic behaviors.

The purpose of this study is to realize the live stories of an Alzheimer’s patient and the key caregiver by the technique of narrative research analysis in qualitative research method. According to the profound interviews with the key caregiver, based on the live stories narrated by the caregiver as the script, this study presented their live stories in the way of “holistic-content” and to analyze their life experiences of their daily work in the way of “categorical-content”. Therefore; let’s find out the meaning of life derived from their stories.

The conclusions of this study are the following: (1) Listening to the patients is a basis of the understanding; (2) Ethics of the care-providing and the roles of gender are closely related to each other; (3) Be devoted to this disease and the true-hearted companion; (4) The current resources of care could not satisfy the expectation of those caregivers. Moreover, we also noted that while seeking for the meaning of life, the participants’ previous experience of suffering might inspire them to seek for the hope of the life. It could support the participants who do not abandon the ill persons.

We wish this study could provide a new comprehension about the Alzheimer’s disease and the race of struggle of the key caregiver while facing this illness, in order to provide the family members of dementia persons and the nursing houses a brand new field of vision. Let each and every dementia elderly acquires treatment and concern with dignity.
