碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 水產養殖學系 / 96 / Aquaculture is one of best source of seafood production and an important sector of employment generation. With the growing need and demand for domestic food supplies and the high level of unemployment in underdeveloped countries throughout the world, it is identified as a specific target for countries having potentiality for its development. In this point of view, Haiti, with a favorite climate for the development of aquaculture, try to exploit this opportunity and improve this sector in order to reduce food and employment problems that it is facing. The target group is marine shrimp and the specie is Litopenaeus vannamei. As it is known for its high-level technology and practice experience in aquaculture, Taiwan is a good reference for Haiti in the technique to use for aquaculture production and management.
This study has been focused on economic and technical aspects of the culture of Litopenaeus vannamei in Taiwan in order to identify a technique that can be adopted in Haiti take into account of the strength and weakness of Haiti in Fisheries & Aquaculture sector. The study case was conducted through a survey and visits to shrimp farms, and focused on performance of this specie in different environment of culture. The break-even point (BEP) analysis method was adopted to estimate the performance of each technique. The result shows that from the two production techniques (indoor and outdoor) used in Taiwan, outdoor pond culture is more efficient for Haiti, take into account of the availability of resources, the investment cost and the technical knowledge in this practice. Beside the technique to use, it is suggested to Haiti, through Taiwan experience, to adopt right strategy in regulation, conception of activity program, management and others. It is also showed that, in spite of environmental problems faced by Taiwan in culture of Litopenaeus vannamei, the two techniques used are profitable. The strategies adopted such as technology improvement, aquaculture zoning, assistance to farmers and others, help to minimize these constraints. The skill in aquaculture of Taiwanese farmers and experts can be benefit for the transfer of knowledge to other countries involving in this sector, which need to valorize their human resources through training and formation.
