A study of the characteristics of tidally induced eddies in Nan Wan Bay / 南灣海域潮汐渦漩特性之研究

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 海洋環境資訊學系 / 96 / During spring tides, there will be a cyclone eddy usually in the western of Nan Wan Bay, while at ebb tide there will be an anticyclone eddy in the eastern region of the bay at flood tide.So far there haven’t been many studies focusing on the relation between the formation time of an eddy and each phase of the tide. Besides, we also don’t know much about the development process of an eddy and about the change of its vertical structure during neap tides. This thesis is mainly to analyze the observations made by ship board ADCP ( Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler ) from the Ocean Researcher No.1 cruise number:486 ( 1997/5 ) , Ocean Researcher No.3 cruise number : 401 ( 1997/12 ) , Ocean Researcher No.3 cruise number : 992 ( 2004/8 ) , Ocean Researcher No.3 cruise number : 1267 ( 2007/12 ). A complete research will be conducted in this study about how each phase of the tide will affect the formation of a cyclone eddy and an anticyclone eddy during spring tides and neap tides, how their vertical structures will be changed, how the scale differs when comparing one with the other and also about what their life cycles will be like.
This research contains materials about three spring tides and one neap tide. And the result shows that the anticyclone eddy does not always occur during spring tides. Nevertheless, the anticyclone eddy occurs during the neap tide.During spring tides, the formation is very clear for the cyclone eddy in Nan Wan Bay, though the expanding scale differs.A cyclone eddy is also found in the western region of Nan Wan Bay during the neap tide, however, is limited in that area even after expanding. Moreover, the formation of cyclone eddy is more clear than that of anticyclone eddy no matter it happens during spring tides or neap tides. In addition to the factors of spring tides and neap tides, there might be some other factors that will affect the scale of cyclone eddy and anticyclone eddy. The anticyclone eddies in Nan Wan Bay are not greatly influenced by the vertical depth; on the contrary, the structures of them can extend to the sea floor.
