The distribution of trace metals in the northern Taiwan Strait / 台灣海峽北部海域重金屬分佈

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 海洋環境資訊學系 / 96 / The distribution and concentrations of trace metals (Cd、Cu、Fe、Mn、Ni、Pb、Zn ) in seawater, including dissolved and particulate phases, off the northern Taiwan Strait were investigated by two surveys. The concentrations of particulate metals were chemically divided into non-residual and residual fractions. In addition, the values of partitioning coefficient between dissolved and particulate phases of the studied metals were calculated. The concentration ranges of dissolved trace metals in the study area were: Cd, 0.05-0.58nM; Cu, 0.99-6.03nM; Fe, 5.11-96.25 nM; Mn, 0.93-6.64 nM; Ni, 1.75-14.89 nM; Pb, 0.003-0.18 nM; and Zn,7.93-27.62 nM, respectively.

The spatial distribution of dissolved metals in the study area did not show that the concentration decreased with seaward. In contrast, the spatial distribution of particulate metals, such as Fe, Mn and Ni, exhibited that the concentration decreased with seaward. Both results suggest that the concentrations of trace metals in the coastal seawater influenced by the terrestrial input were more significant in the particulate phase than the dissolved phase. Total concentrations (dissolved + particulate phase) of trace metals in seawater of the studied stations were most dominant in the particulate phase. The percentage of particulate phase to the total metal concentrations and the sequence were: Fe ( >80%) > Mn( 70-95%) > Pb ( 10-95%) > Ni( 20-80%) > Cu( 5-60%) > Zn( 10-30%) > Cd( 0.1-5%). The partitioning coefficient ( log Kd) between particulate and dissolved phase of trace metals was:Fe, 6-8; Mn, 5.5-7; Pb, 5-7; Ni, 5-6.5; Cu, 4-6; Zn, 4.5-5.5; and Cd, 3-4.5. The values of log Kd found in the inshore stations were generally higher than those of the offshore stations. With the exception of Mn, the concentrations of particulate trace metals were chiefly dominant in the residual phase, accounting for more than 60-98% of the total particulate trace metals concentrations. In contrast, the concentration of particulate Mn was dominant in the non-residual phase, accounting for more than 70% of the total particulate concentration.
