Study on the Scuba Diver Recreation Activities in Reefs of Taiwan / 台灣礁區水肺潛水遊憩活動之研究

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 環境生物與漁業科學學系 / 96 / Taiwan and its peripheral islands, such as Penghu, Green Island and
Lanyu Island, possess diverse oceanic topographical and ecological scenery,
and are most potential in developing water activities. In response of the
increasing number of water recreation tourists, scuba diving in reef area has
grown up vigorously in recent years regardless the restriction of a great
deal of policy and decree. Therefore, scuba diving in Taiwan reef sites
deserves further investigation.
This study aimed at probing into the characteristics and recreational
experience of scuba divers in Taiwan waters as well as their perceived
importance and satisfaction toward diving environment and subsidiary
areas. Four environmental attributes of physical environment, social
environment, operation and management environment, and activity facility
environment have been collected. Following suggestions by diving experts,
a random sampling survey was conducted in the popular diving waters of
north coast, northeast corner, Kenting, Penghu, Green Island and others.
350 questionnaires were issued and 300 valid ones returned with effective
return rate 85.71%. Statistical methods of descriptive statistics, cross
tabulation, reliability analysis, factor analysis, T-test, one-way analysis of
variance, correlation analysis, and regression analysis were adopted in
order to realize the relation between satisfaction toward recreational diving
activity and environmental attributes. In addition, Important-Performance
Analysis (IPA) was used to look into the importance of and satisfaction
toward the scuba diving environments. The findings were:
v
1. Analysis of scuba divers’ social background showed respectively that the majority were male, 21-30 years of age, with educational level of
specialized college or university, single, general employees in industry or
commerce, with average monthly salary below NT15,000, residents in
Taipei City, and mostly engage in scuba diving in summer.
2. A higher rate of participants responded their diving experience no longer
than 1 year, of basic diving experience, with diving more than 7 times,
mostly diving along north coast; they had less than 6 cylinders, and
purposed to visit sea floor and coral reefs.
3. The recreational behavior of divers were mostly related to the diving
information from relatives / friends or the internet, and drove their own
vehicle to the spots, in smaller than 5-people group, stayed for one day,
with cost less than NT1000, with self own diving equipment. Many were
willing to participate in ecological scuba diving itinerary, and would like to
revisit to the diving spots.
4. Regarding the reef environment, the analysis extracted factors of
environmental attribute importance such as physical environmental
attribute and activity facility, reef conservation and scuba diving suitability,
and factors of recreational satisfaction including diving spots and
complementary measures, reef conservation and diving suitability, and
superior diving spots maintenance. Social background of the importance of
reef environmental attributes, and age and education level of satisfaction
toward the environment both were tested to significant difference.5. I.P.A. analysis of reef environmental attributes and recreational
experience revealed that high perceived importance and high satisfaction
(the first quadrant) emphasizes the fishery resource in reef; low perceived
importance yet high satisfaction (the second quadrant) were paid to diving
transport network, convenient parking facility, link between diving and
adjacent scenic spots, diving suitability in reef area, species and quantity of
water life, ecological abundance on sea floors and so on; low perceived
importance and low satisfaction (the third quadrant) focus on the reef
locating suitability; high perceived importance yet low satisfaction (the
fourth quadrant) items included governmental attitude toward reef
ecological conservation, divers’ perceived importance toward reef
ecological conservation, the overall environmental quality in diving area,
the equipment supply in diving shops, policy and decree in diving area,
diving promotion and propaganda in reef area and so on. The conclusion
may be offered to diving industry and governmental agencies as reference.
