Age and Growth of Sharpspine Skate, Okamejei acutispina in the Northeastern Waters off Taiwan / 台灣東北部海域耳棘老板鯆之年齡與成長

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 環境生物與漁業科學學系 / 96 / The sharpspine skate, Okamejei acutispina, is the by-catch of trawl fishery in northeastern Taiwan waters and it is regarded as trash fish due to its low economic value. The specimens of sharpspine skate were collected from Dashi fish market, Yilan County. Age determination from vertebral band counting was based on 652 specimens (356 female and 296 male) and verified by length-frequency analysis of 1,444 specimens (768 female and 676 male). Translucent and opaque bands on vertebral centrum were formed once year, and translucent bands were formed in November. Up to 11 and 10 bands were counted for females and males, respectively. The parameters of von Bertalanffy growth equations estimated from vertebral band counting were as the following: asymptotic disc width L∞=37.6 cm, growth coefficient k=0.153/yr, age at zero length t0 =-0.53 yr for females; and L∞=32.7 cm, k=0.165/yr, t0=-1.01 yr for males. The age at maturity were estimated to be 6.9~8.8 yr for female, 5.8~8.9 yr for male. The largest female aged from vertebrae was 11 yr old and the largest male 10 yr old. Length-frequency analysis supported our vertebral ageing estimates.
