Ways of Being Male: The Male Idenity of Ged in The Earthsea Cycle / 成男之道:析論《地海傳說》中格得的男性認同

碩士 / 國立臺東大學 / 兒童文學研究所 / 97 / Gender is relational and it operates in relations among individuals and various social groups. Gender identity is a more contestable and complicated field under debate of the “essentialist vs. constructivist” theories. The critical and analytical discourses relating to masculinity in children’s literature are in urgent development. Thus, the main concern of this study intends to examine how the author conveys her ideological construction of personifying the male in her protagonist through young adult fiction.

Drawing upon R.W. Connell’s theory of masculinities, Jacques Lacan’s phallocentrism, Louis Althusser’s ideological discourse, as well as Michael Foucault’s theory on sexuality and power, among others, this study aims to examine the male identity of the protagonist Ged in the the Earthsea Cycle by Ursula K. Le Guin. Under the ideological construction of the society, Ged acted and represented his hegemonic and dominant masculinity by abjecting femininity, competed for the power and released the shadow, divorced his sexual desire and achieved to be the Archmage, who had the greatest power in the Earthsea world. To save the world, he lost his magical powers and had to confront the crisis of his male identity. Le Guin emphasized the power of the female, having Ged overcome his weaknesses by reconnecting with his feminine side and by articulating his counter hegemonic representation. The study concludes with the reflections of gender values in heroic tales and expectations that the methods of personifying the male character in children’s literature do not have to remain so rigid, but can be more multifaceted in portraying the male identity.
