博士 / 中國文化大學 / 地學研究所 / 96 / The interactions and transformations between human and environment have always been important issues in geographic subject. This research takes title of “cultural landscape” is aimed to explain interactions between human and environment and to understand the characteristics of cultural landscape. Basing on cultural landscape theory, interpreting by hermeneutics and taking methods of historical geography are going to understand the formations, transformations and impacts of landscape elements. Furthermore, I am going to interpret the meanings of transformation process and characteristics of the cultural landscape.

In my research, the scattered settlement cultural landscape in Lan-Yang plain is unique, significant and famous landscape of bamboo enclosures. For understanding how the cultural landscape is formed, this research focuses on the impacts of driving forces in the cultural landscape at the beginning. There are 3 kinds of driving force which are the natural driving force, the social and cultural driving force, and the political and economical driving force. Secondly, this research analyzes the formations and characteristics of 5 component elements of scattered village cultural landscape. The 5 component elements are filed patches, paddy, waterways, roads and traditional farmhouses surrounded by bamboo enclosure.

It reveals that the cultural landscape has always been processing and changing, but it has never been finished. There are 4 characteristics which are belonged to the cultural landscape. The 4 characteristics are interactions between human and environment, regions, constant activities, and historical continuity. Human driving forces play a main role in making cultural landscape. In old times, the social and cultural driving force was the main force to make the cultural landscape. It took a long period of time to transform the farmhouses which were close to the day life of villagers. In late time, the political and economical driving force is the main force to transform the whole ettlement landscape in stead of single buildings’ landscape, and its transformation is efficient and evident.

This research also shows the functions and characteristics of the cultural landscape elements. Being component elements, filed patches and paddy which occupy the most area control the landscape presentation. As liner component elements, waterways and roads which other elements located alongside control the form of landscape from before to nowadays. Being spot component elements, the traditional farmhouses surrounded by bamboo enclosure are the main roles of the cultural landscape.

Finally, there are 4 implications for interpreting the meaning of the scattered settlement cultural landscape characterized by bamboo enclosure in Lan-Yang plain: representation of native place life style, migration and practice of native place culture, respect to environment, and adjustable standard patterns.
