碩士 / 臺北市立教育大學 / 視覺藝術學系碩士班 / 96 / In "Art and Visual Perception," Rudolf Arnheim indicated: "When two equal objects are shown in the left and right halves of the visual field, the one on the right looks larger. For them to appear equal the one on the left has to be increased in size." Oppe in his” Right and Left in Raphael’s Cartoons ” also revels his view points of “Left and Right”. The purposes of study are the followings:
1. Do people look at a picture from left to right?
2. If pictures change appearance and lose meaning when tured into their mirror images?
3. Is the object on the left side in a panting need to be bigger than that on the right?
Literature review, a questionnaire, and picture analyses were used to investigate the issues, The findings are
1. Only 50 percent of the subjects view a picture from left to right.
2. An inverted picture does not affect its aesthetic sense. Whether the tapestries or the cartoons be the more attractive one may not be verified by this study.
3. The results of the questionnaire show that the subjects do not favor pictures with larger area on the left. They favor pictures which are symmetrical. Further more, according to the analyses of the pictures in books of art history , only 20 percent match Arnheim’s theory. Therefore, Arnheim’s theory may not be verified by this study.
4. Habitually use of the left or right hand has no connection with the preference of the center of gravity in a picture, but it is much easier to see people who are a left-handers used to draw a handle of mark cup on the left-handed side than right-handers.
Based on the results of the questionnaire and the analyses of the pictures in books of art history, the following three points of view from my research may not be strongly supported.
1. People look at the picture from left to right.
2. pictures change appearance and lose meaning when tured into their mirror images
3. The left area in a picture need to be bigger than the right.
