This study explored the heart rate variability (HRV) before and after diving and snorkeling, and the correlation between clinical data and HRV variables in divers. Fifteen licensed male divers, aged 34.6 with 174.7cm / 75.3kg / BMI 24.7(kg/m2)/ SBP 121.8(mmHg) in average, were recruited. Clinical data including body length, body weight, body mass index, waist circumstance, and blood pressure was collected. Electrocardiogram (ECG) in supine position before and after diving and snorkeling was collected for 15 minutes in all study subjects. Time and frequency domain measures were compared before and after diving or snorkeling, and between diving and snorkeling. The correlation between clinical data and HRV measures was analyzed by Pearson-product moment correlation. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. A further analysis of HRV correlation was conducted by dividing the tested divers into two groups: a) body mass index (BMI) higher / lower than 25kg/m2; b) systolic blood pressure (SBP) higher/lower than 120mmHg.
There were no significant differences before and after diving or snorkeling and between diving and snorkeling in HRV measures. However a correlation between body mass index or systolic blood pressure and percentage change in HRV measures was demonstrated after snorkeling. Those with body mass index higher than 25kg/m2 or with systolic blood pressure higher than 120mmHg had greater HRV enhancement after snorkeling than those with lower body mass index or lower systolic blood pressure. Divers with higher body mass index or higher systolic blood pressure might have beneficial effect in HRV regard after snorkeling.
