碩士 / 玄奘大學 / 外國語文學系碩士班 / 97 / The purpose of this study is to do research on the vocabulary learning strategies used by the proficient and less proficient sixth graders at Miaoli Haikou Elementary School and identify the frequency of EFL vocabulary learning strategies. Moreover, the study will also explore if there is correlation between English proficiency and use of vocabulary learning strategies.
Participants in the study were all the sixth graders, including 85 students, 46 boys and 39 girls aged 11-12, from Miaoli Haikou Elementary School. This school is a public school located in Haikou Village, Miaoli County. The main sources of the data were the participants’ English proficiency test, vocabulary learning strategies questionnaire in Chinese version from Wang (2004), and oral interview.
The analysis of the data shows as follows. First of all, proficient students used more vocabulary learning strategies than less proficient students. Moreover, proficient students were inclined to use cognitive strategies most frequently and use social strategies and metacognitive strategies least frequently. However, less proficient students tended to use social strategies and memory strategies most frequently and use metacognitive Strategies least frequently. Second, proficient students might have more vocabulary strategies than less proficient students obtained from oral interviews. Third, there was correlation between English proficiency and use of vocabulary learning strategies.
Finally, the discussion, conclusion, and implication for further study are presented in the final chapter of the study.
