Consuming Spectacle: A Sociological Study of the Space Transition of Taipei and Shanghai / 消費景觀:台北與上海城市圖像與空間意涵的轉變

Drawing from the specific spaces of Shanghai and Taipei, this thesis examines the cultural-sociological significance of transition of the urban spaces to critically assess the impact of consumption on the character of nowadays cities.

Cities in order to align with the international community to enhance the visibility and urban scenery of good sense, one after another to create a sense of modern with excellent architectural design and try to create a visual with the space of “Spectacle.” With the urbanization speed up of the city that gradually swallowed up the old traditional neighborhood, so that the old street, alley, getting the quietly be wiped off from the map, and these changes guided step-by-step transformation of two cities for the characterization of modern and historical and cultural development in miniature.

As the experienced of spaces are indispensable for our daily lives, therefore the spatial structure has been a culture’s specification. In this case, this thesis focuses on the processing of the architectural and spatial transformation. Taipei's Xin Yi Commerce District, Shanghai’s Xintiandi and Huangpu Bund are the chosen sites as the specific observation for this transformation. Between Chinese and Western cultures or ancient and modern architectural spectacle that trying to explain us how the new meaning has been build up, through the re-interpretation of the city image will bring out the history scene, explore the "re-system" has become the scene of contemporary meaning. The cities usually combine two cities part of a newly developed area in the city under the concept that will create new consumer field and newly consumer value access to depict and interpret the nature of the urban transition process.

The study found that the difference between the two cities:Shanghai's history of timing and sense of space construction vertically integration shaped the history and sense of space consumption, mixed the old and new material and the desire to produce unique Spectacle. Lead to the eventual return to the "consumer concession" the historical scenes; Taipei is entitled to build a pile of construction constitutes a large number of replication and foreign culture, symbols, the city is also rapidly integrating resources integration level of convergence of all, therefore Taipei converged multi-function for many consumers to experience modern life style and consume.
