碩士 / 義守大學 / 資訊管理學系碩士班 / 97 / Since 1990, the ratio of Taiwan families with a foreign spouse has increased rapidly. As of 2009, there were 113,173 elementary school students from a family with a foreign spouse, which is about 6.76% of the elementary student population.
Today in Taiwan, information is easy accessible via the internet. The internet has become an indispensable tool for gathering information and research for the majority of Taiwanese.
However, families with a foreign spouse may not be able to provide their children with access to a computer and the internet because of lower socio-economic and financial status of such a family. As a result, the child may lag behind their peers in the learning curve and in scholastic testing. As a consequence of the educational level or language barriers, a female foreign spouse may not be able to foster adequate interpersonal relationship skills with her children. Therefore, the child has less of an opportunity to seek information through internet, it resulting in lower academic levels.
This study of the correlation in internet usage, interpersonal relationships and learning achievements in math and Mandarin is based on the analysis of all 3rd to 6th grade students in an elementary school, which is located at the beach village in the outside of Kaohsiung County.
As to the background of the foreign parent, the research discovered that the students with the highest academic averages are both parents from mainland China, followed by Taiwanese parents, then parent from other countries. Students having one parent from a country other than China or Taiwan had lower academic achievement and test scores due to the background of the foreign parent and the lower socio-economic status of the family.
The study also found that students from a family with a higher socio-economic status have higher test score averages in Mandarin and mathematics, because of better relationship with friends. After utilizing the control of interpersonal relationship factor, the effect from higher social-economics status became less noticeable. The students from lower social-economics families have lower learning achievements indirectly impacted by over 4-hour internet accessing each time. In addition, the study found the students with better relationship with other classmates have better academic learning results.
