This research finds that the main motives for Foxconn to adopt merger strategies are in order to integrate vertical resources, enter new markets, obtain new technologies, and integrate complementary resources. Integrating vertical resources makes its value chain near complete. Entering new markets makes its sales increase and enlarges its economy of scale. Integrating the complementary resources reduces the waste of the resources and cost. Obtaining new technologies is also for completing the value chain of the cellular phone industry. Therefore, the Merger trend of Foxconn’s cellular phone industry leads toward the value chain completion and the new market acquiring.
Adopting Merger offers companies growing the revenue and the size with high speed, but it has risks. To reduce the existing risks in Merger and to know how to choose correct Merger targets, we studied all the patents of the companies which were mergered by Foxconn. We would like to understand the technological area in IPC among mergered companies, analyze the numbers of patent for each mergered company and distribution of its IPC technology, study the technology owned by mergered companies is correlative or complementary with what acquiring companies do. In view of the importance and the prevalence of Merger, this research finds out an effective and accurate way better than the past by studying the real practical case of patent and technological analysis for offering companies an efficient assessment on their investment targets before investing or taking Merger. Most patents were possessed and complementary before being taken merger, to complement the technology of Foxconn’s cellular phone industry.
