Spatio-temporal changes in biomass and abundance of benthic diatoms in the Kaomei wetland / 高美溼地底棲矽藻群集時空變化

Benthic diatoms are important primary producers in tidal flats. However, study
on benthic diatoms on tidal flats is very limited in Taiwan. This study is aimed to
determine the chlorophyll a concentration and cell abundance of benthic diatoms in
the Kaomei wetland of central Taiwan from October 2006 to December 2007. The
analyzed sediment environmental variables were derived from the survey data of
2005-2006. The results showed that the highest silt/clay content occurred in
September, but the lowest in March. The highest organic nitrogen content occurred in
March, but the lowest in June. Other environmental variables failed to show temporal
variations. Water content, grain size, and organic carbon and nitrogen contents
showed spatial variations. They were significantly higher at Site D with plant
coverage from other sites. Cell number of benthic diatoms showed temporal variations.
The highest number occurred in April, which can be attributable to the relatively large
number of small-sized diatoms. Chlorophyll a concentration showed a significant
temporal and spatial interaction. The greatest value occurred at Site D in February,
which can be attributable to the contribution of large-sized diatoms. The large-sized
diatoms Cymbella. sp2.、Nitzschia.sp3.、Nitzschia. sp6. and Gyrosigma. sp. were the
most representative species at Site D, which can be discerned from other sites. The
redundancy analyses showed that the silt/clay and organic carbon contents were the
most important variables explaining the distribution of benthic diatoms in the Kaomei
wetland. Spearman correlation analyses demonstrated that grain size correlated
negatively with diversity index, large-sized diatoms and diatom biovolume; but
organic carbon and nitrogen contents correlated positively with the cell number of
large-sized diatoms and diatom biovolume. large-sized diatoms appear to more
responsible to environmental variables than small-sized diatoms.
