博士 / 國立成功大學 / 交通管理學系碩博士班 / 97 / This study examines the effect of cabin safety education on passenger cabin safety awareness in knowledge, attitude, and behavior (KAB). The educational value of KAB has been addressed in various fields such as AIDS prevention and campus safety. KAB has been applied in aviation safety related areas, especially in training, such as crew resource management training, pilot training, and maintenance training. However, KAB has not been implemented in the passenger education of cabin safety. This study uses the construct of “cabin safety education”, which is intended to influence airline passenger’s knowledge of, attitude toward, and behavior about cabin safety awareness. Surveys are conducted at two Taiwan airports.
The findings indicate that an increase in cabin safety knowledge positively affects airline passenger behavior, which supports knowledge-behavior consistency. The hypothesis that cabin safety knowledge positively affects passenger attitude — knowledge-attitude consistency is also supported. We also find that a positive attitude toward cabin safety positively affects airline passenger’s behavior, which supports attitude-behavior consistency. Meanwhile, the cabin safety education positively affects airline passenger knowledge, attitude, and behavior.
The recommendations of this study are that cabin safety education be included in the compulsory education curriculum of the general public, and that domestic airports establish aviation museums to promote aviation education. Different educational approaches should be considered for citizens of different demographic backgrounds. In Taiwan, for example, educational psychology should probably be more emphasized for males while a hands-on training opportunity would probably be better for females. Finally, further exploration in comparing passengers from different areas in conjunction with the effectiveness evaluation of cabin safety education is needed for the overall improvement of cabin safety.
