Magic within Words: New Chinese Character Lettering of Modern Poster Design / 字裡乾坤:現代海報設計之漢字新藝

碩士 / 國立高雄師範大學 / 視覺傳達設計研究所 / 97 / Abstract
Words and language can show a country’s historical background and local cultural contexts. Activity of commercial advertising can show the current developments of living environments and economic development. Therefore, this study considers the application of Chinese characters and symbols on visual design in posters. This study first collects works done by designers from Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea from international poster design invitational exhibitions, and considers the origins, development, and application of Chinese characters. Then, it is supplemented with the application correlation on posters to deal with the primary subject. Then, the study turns to the application of Chinese character posters on two-dimensional design. The “eight methods” of expression noted by Chinese scholar Tsao Fang in modern Chinese character art design are used to categorize the posters by format. Then, the categorized samples are analyzed via Chinese scholar Wang Kuo-lun’s division into the “six methods” of creativity in Chinese characters as poster content analysis. Finally, semiotic theories are used to analyze and summarize how Chinese characters are expressed in modern poster design. The study finds that among the eight methods of design format, “borrowing from extra-character design” and “traditional calligraphy design” are easily expressed forms in terms of material usage and creativity. Among the six methods of creativity, “imagery” is the most easily expressed in content, and least limited to any formal expression. This study uses different research methodology and perspectives to interpret more symbols and visual cues, and summarizes new appearances in Chinese character design expression.
