The Influence of the Western Culture on Graphic Design in Modern China - Based on the Image of Monthly Calendar / 西風東漸-從月份牌海報看中國近代平面設計的西方文化影響

碩士 / 高雄師範大學 / 視覺傳達設計研究所 / 97 / Monthly Calendar had accompanied Chinese to undergo a period of history glorified with brightness, elegance and grace. It is a product promoted at the beginning of 20th century with the combination of both Asian and Western cultures and designs; its cultural value has been enhanced after a century while the time has also eased its impression to be merchandised as a product. According to the patterns of Monthly Calendar, we can imagine the background of the era, the implication of the culture and the design of the art at that time. Monthly Calendar just appropriately reflected the real situation of Shanghai society from every diverse aspect. The main goal of this research is to explore the developing situation of the design and society from the influence of the western culture through Monthly Calendar at that time.
This paper is going to discuss Monthly Calendar from 1914 to 1949 and it will specially focus on those females with fashion costumes to be their main targets to define the features and styles of Monthly Calendar from the Asian and Western views of visual design. Besides, Monthly Calendar had revealed the social atmosphere after the westernization and with the advocacy of the art design, Chinese had arisen their own self-examination towards their nationality to renew Chinese people’s thoughts and lives. Monthly Calendar represented two cultures at the same time which are traditional Chinese culture and western culture and the results of this research are as the following:
1. Unique Chinese Visual Style
Monthly Calendar was influenced by western culture on several aspects including the designs, the subjects and the displaying skills. It also inherited the traditional Chinese paintings and kept the western devising styles simultaneously. Monthly Calendar blended the modes of both Asia and West to create a brand new visual culture to form a trend to characterize the unique era.
2. Westernization is the motive power towards the improvement of China
The varieties of the living modes were exhibited by Monthly Calendar in western culture. While the Chinese were enjoying the satisfaction with the western products, they were actually heading towards the state of modernization. Modern life was composed of many western skills and these techniques expanded not only the delivery of western culture (or concepts) but also led Chinese to lead new lives which were different from what they had before.
3. Symbolizing the females of a new era
Monthly Calendar had faithfully presented the era role of females and through the calendar, women’s life styles and social status can be seen to be more diversified. Monthly Calendar had obviously shown the standard value of ideal modern females and the value had also sent back the change of the age.
4. The design with rich nationalism
Under the strike and effect of western culture, Chinese’s national consciousness had started to arise and the consciousness was just appropriately reflected on the content of Monthly Calendar. While experiencing the western civilization, the spirit of Chinese nationality was revealed at the same time on Monthly Calendar to come out with the style filled with nationality.
