Studies on the Fishing-Village Culture of Shuang Chun Settlement in Bei Men Township / 北門鄉雙春聚落漁村文化研究

碩士 / 國立臺南大學 / 台灣文化研究所碩士班 / 97 / Located in the northwest of Bei Men Township, Shuang Chun settlement is administrated by Shuang Chun Village in Bei Men Township. The settlement is formed on the river shoal lying at the mouth of Ba Zhang Stream and Ji Shui Stream. Crisscrossed with canals, water-inletting is convenient in this area. Thus, this settlement is built to be fishing farms and the residents make a living by fish-farming. The ways that the residents live on had undergone fish-catching, shellfish-collecting, oyster-dredging, and many other gathering types of life in coastal waters. In recent years, their ways of fishery life have turned into a steady lifestyle, credited to the commercial mariculture. However, despite the fact that some residents have started the culture of high-profit aquatic products since 1980s, the research organizations and the residents have not been able to cooperate, and thus the mariculture is still met with a predicament. On the other hand, the locals have a very pious religious belief, concerning much with mariculture. This is the reason that the thesis aims to explore the association between the complexity of religious beliefs and the mariculture. The thesis will specifically discuss the transformation of customs and practices attributed to geographical features.
Via a quantified questionnaire survey and a great number of qualified interviews, the thesis probes into the influence that natural environment and man factors have on Shuang Chun Settlemen, and clarify the connection between the development of industry and the changes of population as well. Also, to highlight the feature of local religious belief, the information gathered from field work is well-used to analyze the association between religious belief and industrial development in Shuang Chun Settlemen. Further more, the thesis examines the intension and spirit of the customs and practices in Shuang Chun Settlemen, simultaneously specifying the changes in the rituals of birth and death, marriage, funeral and burial, and the celebration of festivals.
On the whole, the development of major industry in Shuang Chun Settlemen is on the verge of a choke point, contributing to the serious emigration of population. The fishery techniques and financial capabilities decide who is categorized as thr rich ethnic group in Shuang Chun Settlemen. Owing to residents’ long-existing sense of uncertainty and insecurity, the religious strength has had a great impact on the residents’ life. Materialism and utilitariamism are involved in religious activities, and deities are socialized. The rituals and practices in important events, such as the Chinese New Year, the birth of a new- born baby, the turning into a grown-up, the wedding and the funeral, are by degrees simplified. Woman matchmakers and Taoist priests respectively play a critical role in wedding and funeral ceremonies. As for the aspect of material life, the local consumption is in the obvious recession and recreational life tends to be increasingly monotonous.
