碩士 / 國立臺南大學 / 台灣文化研究所碩士班 / 97 / Located at the gateway of the Kaohsiung-Pingtung River to the sea, Linyuan Township is situated to be the ideal fishing town as its surrounding sea area offer great fish stocks. As a result of the typical poor agricultural value of coastal lands, along with its ideal costal location, the Town of Linyuan has come to be the fishing town it is today. Mainly, the fishery industry of Linyuan can be categorized into two types, which are fishing and aquafarming. The difference in port construction makes Linyuan’s fishing industry unique among others in the region. In terms of aquafarming, however, Linyuan’s the relatively small aquafarming scale limits the industry to the farming of high economic value fishes, fast breeding fishes, and shrimps.
Due to the great danger that comes with the job, most fishermen have religious beliefs. In fact, religious beliefs are vital to a fisherman’s life. In addition to the common belief of the Sea God, local temples are also central to fishermen’s religious beliefs. With the passage of time and evolution the industry, many of the fishermen''s religious activities and taboos also experience gradual changes and adjustments.
The establishment of Linyuan Petrochemical Industrial Park changes of the once quiet fishing town for the worse with polluted living and fishing environments. As a result of the reduced fish stocks, fishermen are forced to expand their fishing radius, hence, increasing their operating costs. The consequence of such chain of actions is increased number of part-time fishermen and population outflow, especially among the younger generations. Those who do stay are left with little choices but to rely on foreign fishing crews.
This study aims to understand the changes in the fishing industry of Linyuan Township from the perspective of the fishery evolution and religious beliefs with the passing of time. Moreover, the impact of the establishment of petrochemical industrial park on the fishing town of Linyuan and how fishermen adapt to the new environment are also explored.
