碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 航運管理學系 / 97 / Since the launch of the first containership in 1966, carriers set up orders based on Panama Canal. This rule was broken in April 1988. In order to increase the utility and decrease unit cost of the vessel, every carrier is looking for scale economic that makes serious competition of ordering larger container ships in liner shipping. Nevertheless, deliberately considering market supply, capital preparation, berth efficiency, equipment, etc., to order larger container ships. Firstly, this thesis defines large vessel means the vessel could not pass Panama Canal. That’s what we call large vessel in this thesis. Furthermore, according to literature, to dig out and sort every fact, merit, defect and limit that influence ordering larger container ships. In practice, there are many factors that affecting the selections as “cargo business”, “capital cost”, “berth & terminal”, “personnel & equipment” and “the design of vessel schedule”. The aim of this study is to analyze the case of ordering larger container ships and combine suitable model by means of fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) based on one carrier in Taiwan. Therefore, the criterion and weights could be calculated to set up the determinants of selecting suitable model in ordering larger container ships. Among the factors as above mentioned, the biggest one is “capital cost”. How to find the capital & vessel cost, outreach of gantry crane, the capacity of storage yard and carriers’ competition are top 5 factors. POST III is the suitable model of carrier A to order larger container ships based on enough capital & relevant issues are under control. The selection model will be changed according to carriers’ strategies. In the future, we could figure out the factors of ordering larger container ships in connection with different carriers’ models.
