Strategies for Trans-Pacific Liner Shipping Companies in Considering Enlargement Plan of Panama Canal / 巴拿馬運河拓寬後越太平洋航線定期航商之經營策略

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 航運管理學系 / 97 / The traffic volume of trans-Pacific liner shipping is the largest among those container shipping lines. It is the same in the competition situation and growth rate. In consideration of the enlargement plan of Panama Canal, of which Panamanian Government allocates around US5.25 billion for this project, aims to improve the bottleneck of trans-Pacific shipping, especially for those trades shipped to the US east coast. As long as this project is completed, it will change the current situation of trans-Pacific shipping and result in certain impact on those liner shipping companies, which have been engaged in these trades. It is disputable whether or not the enlargement of Panama Canal will force shipping liners to build more very large container ships, namely those ships with capacity up 12000 TEU. This thesis therefore explores current economic development situation, the competition situation of present trans-Pacific liner shipping and the improvement projects to be adopted by the port authorities in the US east coast. All factors will affect the operation strategies of which shipping companies as a whole. This thesis uses literature review and interview in order to find out the impact of the enlargement plan of Panama Canal. It aims to provide reference for those parties involved in the trades, including liner shipping companies, port operators in Far East areas and the US East/West Coast, the US inland transportation operator, as well as shipbuilding companies.
