The purpose of this thesis is to identify the competency and develop a competence model for masters of merchant ships. By using relative literature and Behavioral Event Interviews (BEI) of data collection, following the competency dictionary from the Spencer & Spencer’s book “Competences at Work” identify competency and develop the competency model for masters of merchant ships. The competency model for masters of merchant ships is consisting of 10 competencies from competency dictionary and 1 competency from personal observation. The model in according with the weight sequence of the competency is as following: Impact and Influence, Organizational Commitment, Relationship Building, Directiveness, Expertise, Interpersonal Understanding, Self-Control, Self-Confidence, Developing Others, Fair and Reasonable and Teamwork and Cooperation. Results of the thesis can help for shipping company for evaluating and auditing of for masters of merchant ships and provide the foundation of training programs for masters of merchant ships.
