碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 商船學系所 / 97 / The Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) will bring the revolutionary change to wireless communication and Internet. It is used as a kind of “ last mile” access service. The prompt development of this new technology will make it possible to access the internet through wireless WiMAX network.
Using the WiMAX Project in National Chi-Nan University, the characteristics of IEEE 802.16d and IEEE 802.16e are studied. Potential applications of this new technology on ships are also discussed.
The IP type network, 50 kilometers coverage, 75 Mbps data rate, and 120 km/hr mobility characteristics of WiMAX should be able to be used for marine radio communication, vessel traffic service, GMDSS, positioning, and Internet on ships.
