The Development of Variations in the Eighteenth Century: Taking Haydn’s Piano Variation Works as Examples / 變奏曲於十八世紀之發展與演變--以海頓鋼琴變奏作品為例

碩士 / 國立臺北教育大學 / 音樂學系碩士班 / 98 / Joseph Haydn (Franz Joseph Haydn, 1732-1809)plays a leading role in the development of variations in the late Eighteenth century, a phase between Baroque and Pre-Classical era. In addition to following the techniques used by C.P.E Bach(Karl Philipp Emanuel Bach, 1714-1788), Haydn makes innovation on the forms and techniques of variations.
Different forms of variations have been derived since the Baroque period, such as cantus-firmus variation, Double, ostinato variation, and constant-harmony variation. Further examples are continuous variation, sectional variation, single-theme variation, or hybrid variation in the Pre-classical era. No matter what types, the fundamental technique is the repetition of theme or utilization of theme contrast theme. Single-theme variation is the one that Haydn uses the most frequently.
Haydn’s variations can be divided into two types: piano variations and keyboard sonata. The first type consists of five independent piano variations, and the second type, nineteen keyboard sonatas. It could be observed that Haydn’s creations for piano variations are all sectional variation, and those for keyboard sonata are all continuous variation. In addition, piano variations are usually composed by two theme-repetition episodes and they are usually played with up-beat. However, in keyboard sonatas, the variation set usually occurs in the first and the last movement. Furthermore, keyboard sonatas are sometimes played by allegro and sometimes by adagio and andante. The integration of different tempo for keyboard sonatas makes the creation more colorful and vivid.
Through the examination and classification of Haydn’s variation works, the thesis aims to interpret his work from different viewpoints. Six chapters are included. The first chapter is introduction. The second one is literature review on the development of variations in the eighteenth century. The third one is research method and design. The fourth one is the classification of Haydn’s works on piano variations. The fifth is the development of and analysis on Haydn’s piano variation works. The last chapter is conclusion.
