Family Genealogy Writing in Taiwan Contemporary Female Prose / 當代台灣女性散文的家族書寫—以鍾文音《昨日重現》、簡媜《天涯海角》為分析對象

碩士 / 國立臺北教育大學 / 台灣文化研究所 / 97 / “Home” is the root of a personal life and the important sphere for enlightening the sense of “self identity.” Therefore, in many Taiwan literary works, the family story is always the important source of inspiration for many authorial writings.

Because of the culture of society in early Taiwan, there are few chances for females to have a good education. Consequently, most authors for literary creation are male. “Saga Novel” written by the male author at that time is the prototype of family genealogy writing. The content describes family ancestors immigrating to Taiwan and doing land clearing hardly.

After termination of martial law in Taiwan, the culture of society enters the transition state of openness and diverseness. Because of more and more females receiving high-level education and more openness of the social system, there is a trend of female writing generated. Under such circumstances, a large number of family genealogy writings written from the female point of view are generated more than those written from the male point of view.

I am always deeply touched after reading family stories written by female authors. Different from the writing style of novel majorly constructed by fabrication, prose constructed by recording truth can always touch readers much more. It makes readers realizing self experience although prose is the family story of author himself.

“Recurred Yesterday” written by Wenin Chung and “Ends of the Earth” written by Chen Chien chosen in this thesis for research are quite outstanding works in family genealogy writings of contemporary Taiwanese female prose. “Recurred Yesterday” the only prose of three family related works written by Wenin Chung, is highly characteristic in her family genealogy writings. “Ends of the Earth” is a quite important work recently written by Chen Chien. Different from some early works described female self life from the female point of view, in “Ends of the Earth,” Chen Chien views herself and the place where she grew up with more open mind and view. It is the important work created from the innovation of searching the creating subject for prose by Chen Chien.

The researching direction of this thesis can be concluded with three parts. First of all, how to present the paternal and maternal line in family genealogy writings by female writers of verse is described here. Second, how to show emotions for hometown where they grew up by female writers of verse in family genealogy writing is included. At last, the different writing strategy used by Wenin Chung and Chen Chien in family genealogy writing is also analyzed in detail.
