Abstract

Family is the place where we acquire our initial and the most intimate relationships. Our family shapes and models on our behavior and has the ingrained influence on us. It is fair to say that the building up of the parent-child relationship is the foundation for all the other successful social relationships later on. If, unfortunately, we fail a child in building up the first intimate relationship with him or her, it would pose more difficulties for the child in establishing benign relationships with other people in society.

Yet as the society has changed rapidly in the past few years, family has gradually lost its superiority it once had. Nowadays, most parents prioritize making money and pursuing promotion on top of the parent-child relationship. Children no longer interact with their parents as intimately as before. Though living together, each family member has his or her own business to attend to. Therefore, there is an ever-enlarging gap between parents and children, which not only poses an extreme test and trial for the fragile parent-child relationship, but also indirectly results in some severe educational and social problems. In fact, a good parent-child relationship is prior to any effective parenting. If parents and children can trust each other, it can be much easier for the parents to communicate with and discipline their teenage children, who may go through the turbulent phase of rebellion.

My thesis focuses on “The Parent-Child Relationships in Children’s Literature of Lin Hai-Ying,” in an attempt to analyze the various parent-child relationships in Lin’s children’s literature. I will discuss the interactions and its educational significance in studying pairs of father and daughter, father and son, mother and son, as well as mother and daughter. I expect to remind the public of the importance of the parent-child relationship, further making them aware of their own relationship with their children. Only based on a harmonious parent-child relationship, can we cultivate and strengthen the children’s wholesome character and personality, which serves to create a secure society in harmony.
