Shanghai, the city which once enjoyed a reputation of Oriental Paris and the Paradise of Adventurer, has been glaring and spackling like an Oriental Perl for hundred years. Shanghai has dimmed for over thirty years since the establishment of New China. Until after the reform and opening-up, Shanghai returned to the history stage by its surprising rapidity of economical development and its impact also swept the world. Two-thirds of the world's top 500 big enterprises has entered the globalize and internationalized Shanghai and more than 60 countries people are competing with each other in Shanghai. Taiwan also has a favorite for Shanghai and some Taiwan people even move to Shanghai. Each person who would like to seek dreams in Shanghai embraces beautiful expectations and dreams. The previous generation of Shanghai people who lived in Taiwan also returned to Shanghai with their Shanghai dream. When the hometown has become an alien land and the native place has been changed, how could they seek their Shanghai dream? For the new generation of Taiwan people who moved to Shanghai, what the different Shanghai dream do they have? How to seek roots and recollect the good old days? How to face the conflicts and the sense of lose? And, how about the identity and the opposition?
How will the new Shanghai people face this phenomenon? What exactly is the difference between old Shanghai and new Shanghai, the old generation of Shanghai and the new generation of Shanghai?
〝Seeking Dreams ─ Shanghai〞 is a TV script which is in the theme of seeking dreams. It describes the status of the old generation of Shanghai people who moved to Taiwan, the second generation of Taiwan people and the native Taiwan people — searching in their dreams, struggling, losing and vanishing. Looking into the real surface of Shanghai and digging the deepest site of humanity from various angles, this script presents the helplessness which is complex and contradictory but real and puzzled. This book not only records the real surface of Shanghai and but also excavates the conflict of Shanghai people and Taiwan people’s sense of superiority. Moreover, it draws a picture of Shanghai’s demeanor, vicissitudes and the feeling of old Shanghai’s humanity characteristics and charming, the alternating of new Shanghai and the old one, as well as the conflicts of Shanghai people and Taiwan people in politics; culture; thought; identify...etc. This script is original and its subject is unprecedented in TV script. Besides, it is a creation which derives from the screenwriter’s many year’s scenario writing experience and his observation of the real lives in Shanghai.
This thesis contains two parts, TV script and the explanation of creation. In the second part, it analyses the structure, plot, characters, dialogue and theme by the method of text analysis and also provide evidence. Furthermore, it also shows the characteristics of this TV script. In the hope of that this thesis could motivate readers to rethink about the various problems of seeking dream in Shanghai, inspire the different thinking point of view for study in the future and face up to the connotation of this thesis presents.
