碩士 / 國立高雄大學 / 運動健康與休閒學系碩士班 / 97 / Leisure constraint has been researched for the past three decades. It has been recently extended to the study in leisure travel. In recent years, the middle-aged and elderly population has emerged as a fast growing, influential, and profitable market segment in travel industry. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate overseas travel constraints for the middle and elderly population, and to examine the hierarchical model of leisure constraints developed by Crawford et al.(1991).
The aim of this study is specifically to investigate (a) constraints on overseas travel participation; (b) the relationship between constraints and socio-demographic characteristics; (c) the differences of constraints between travel participants and non-participants; and (d) the validity of the hierarchical model of leisure constraints. Residents whose age is forty-five years old and above of Kaohsiung city were recruited for questionnaire survey which was based on a construct consisting three categories of constraints, intrapersonal, interpersonal, and structural constraints, proposed by Crawford & Godbey (1987).
Major findings are as follows: (a) the middle-aged and elderly population perceived their overseas travel to be constrained by, mainly, structural constraint, followed by intrapersonal and interpersonal constrains; (b) there were significant differences on travel constraints among socio-demographic groups; (c) there were no differences on travel constraints between travel participants and non-participants; (d) the hierarchical model of leisure constraints was verified. Implications of research results with respect to practitioner practice, government policy-making and future research are provided.
