There are many religious leaders who get identity and support from their followers, Xin Hai Luo Pan Ye Jiao Shou is one of them. He purchases the most valuable time in media for promoting his ideas, which are composed of Buddhist thought mixed with divination, and he also has a website for interacting with his fans and selling products. However Ye Jiao Shou has a multi-image, he has attempted to construct good image for himself but the media views and portrays him in a totally different light. This thesis attempts to analyze Ye Jiao Shou’s image in media through discourse analysis and semeology. It then offers another way to analyze the image of new religious leaders and the process of their disenchantment.
This thesis consists of two parts. First, I analyzed the image that Ye Jiao Shou has attempted to create for himself, which includes good character traits such as diligence, authority, intelligence and kindness. Through the image Ye Jiao Shou created, he seems to be a spiritual leader who has an uncommon birth, never expects to be repaid for his good deeds, and is always merciful and offers a way of salvation. These are the traits that Weber used to identify a charisma spiritual leader. However, it has been questioned by the media whether or not Ye Jiao Shou is a fraud. The second portion of this thesis focuses on how Ye Jiao Shou has been represented in the media. Through discourse analysis, this thesis reveals that Ye Jiao Shou’s image in mass media is one of a superstitious person who is preoccupied with gods and spirits, a religious swindler who sells sacred water, a celebrity who covets other people's property, and a buffoon. There is a serious gap between Ye Jiao Shou's self-proclaimed image and the image that the media portrays of him. From this, it can be seen that there is no symbol reality that can accurately reflect the real world.
