碩士 / 世新大學 / 新聞學研究所(含碩專班) / 97 / Many studies show that television is the most commonly viewed media by school children; among all, cartoon is the most popular one. The present study aimed to examine the cartoon viewing behavior of elementary school students on a popular program called SpongeBob, and the effects this cartoon have on their lives, including its influences on elementary school students' learning behavior.
SpongeBob is a cartoon series produced in the U.S.A. by Nickelodeon Kids channel. The initiator is a marine biologist Stephen Hillenburg who is also an animation maker. The background of the story was set in a city called Bikini Bottom located in Pacific Ocean. SpongeBob started broadcasting in 1999 in the U.S.A and was first showing by EBC YOYO channel in September, 2006.
The study took an example of third to sixth graders of an elementary school located in Taipei County. The social survey and focus group were conducted to collect data, then questionnaires were analyzed using SPSS version 12.0. The main findings of the study are as follows:
1.Elementary school students like to watch SpongeBob for the purpose of entertaining.
2.When gender is taken into consideration, boys prefer watching SpongeBob alone or with their siblings. On the other hand, girls preferr watching it with their siblings.
3.The most popular character in SpongeBob is SpongeBob, following by Gary. In answering what is their favorite charactors, 60% of children responded SpongedBod, and they like and will take his optimistic attitude as a model.
4.When looking at physical and language violence in the show, 79.0% of elementary school students will not imitate the bully scenes in the cartoon. It indicata that most children will not resemble the harmful behaviors in their every day life.
5.Elementary school students understand that the stealing behavior皮老闆 has in the show is a bad behavior.
6.Although many elementary students are fond of the affiliated products of SpngeBob, 76.8% of children mentioned they will not purchased the products just because their classmates owned them.
