博士 / 國立成功大學 / 歷史學系碩博士班 / 98 / Taijiang Inner Sea, a lagoon separated from the ocean by a series of barrier islands, was one of the lagoons located in the coast of southwestern Taiwan in the past. To its northeast is the estuary of Zengwun River(曾文溪), and the southern ends of the outfall of the Erhjen River(二層行溪). Its range included some villages and towns today such as Chi-gu(七股), Jiang-jiun(將軍), Jia-li(佳里), Shi-gang(西港), An-ding(安定), Shin-shr(新市)Yung-kang(永康),and Jia-ding(茄定). Regarded as one of the Early Settlements, Taijiang has obviously changed in the transition of topography and environment. Before the Ching Dynasty(清朝) built Taiwan a province, Taijiang had been the core region of political and economical development. That made it occupy an important position in Taiwan history. The storm in 1823, however, caused the lagoon to disappear, led to a decline of its historical position, and formed the conversion of Taiwan’s center from Taijiang to other places. That’s why 1823 was a significant time for the exploitation and my dissertation would focus on the history before 1823.
From the pre-history inhabitants, to the Dutch, the Ming Cheng(明鄭), and the Ching(清代), my research purpose is to reconstruct the transition of natural circumstances such as topography, watercourses and coast line, to discuss the influence of government management, land exploitation, and Han People’s social development built by the change, and to analyze the effect, included local organizational system, military defense, aborigine policy, and situations of traffic, culture education, and society relief, upon the scheme and management of authorities in Taijiang and its vicinity during different periods. Moreover, for interpreting the existence, production, and living of dwellers residing along the coast of the lagoon, I would probe into the economical activities and the mutation involved with the employment of diverse land types like Troops Land(軍屯), Government Land(官庄),Private Land(民田),Aboriginal Land(番田) and Tidal flats(海埔地), and the development of Fisheries, Salt industries, and Aquaculture under disparity space-time background. Furthermore, my dissertation would also try to clarify the civil society patterns in Taijiang and its vicinity during different times and that would help us recognize deeper about the progress of social evolvement through researching the variation on Han people’s villages, religion and commercial trade.
Excepting the preface and conclusion, the main text is consisted of the following three parts. First, narrating Taijiang before the Ching dynasty is inclusive of the spreading along the coast and activities of Formosan Plains Austronesians, Siraya(西拉雅族), and then the practice of Dutch East India Company and Kingdom of Tungning(東寧政權) that both dominated Tayouan(An-Pin安平)and Chi-Kan(赤崁). Second, because Taiwan was occupied by the Ching, Taijiang governed by the Emperor Kang-shi(康熙)was generated much more links between Taiwan and China; therefore, my thesis would analyses the official operation in Taijiang and Han emigrants’ reclamation in the primary stage of the Ching dynasty. Third, the last situation before the lagoon was silted up, middle period of the Ching presented a very variation on government planning, local economy, and civil society because of the intensify deposit of Taijiang affected by human development, the positive administration conducting after Yi-Gui Zhu uprising(朱一貴事件), and the impact of immigrant wave during chian-lung(乾隆) and Jia-ching(嘉慶) periods.
