Revision of the Indigeneity, Culturality and Literariness:Taiwan Indigenous Voice Bimonthly and History of Taiwan Indigenous Literature / 原住民性、文化性與文學性的辯證──《山海文化》雙月刊與台灣原住民文學脈絡

碩士 / 國立成功大學 / 台灣文學系碩博士班 / 98 / In this thesis, I mainly deal with indigeneity, culturality, and literariness as three paradigms to discuss recent development of Taiwan indigenous literature, and special position of Taiwan Indigenous Voice Bimonthly. Based on this approach, I reconsider the “literariness” in minor literature. I believe literary criticisms that engage with language, form, and theme are too simplified to resolve power relation, aesthetic standards, canon debate, particular literary and cultural phenomena, etc. In addition, neither de-colonizing nor post-colonial discourse could theorize the issues of Taiwan indigenous literature, because actually both of them fix minor literature.

I focus on the historical and cultural developments from the 1970s to the late 1990s to indicate how the Taiwan cultural discourse and major literary paradigm have influences on the emergence of Taiwan indigenous literature. The trend of going back to tribes not only changes the essence of indigenous culture and literature, but also challenges the subjectivity of the indigenous people. Hence, I emphasize that the process of “negotiation” plays a very important role in the space of minor literature when it encounters the judgment of major literature by some cases.

My point of view is that the “literariness” of Taiwan indigenous literature, the construction of indigeneity and culturality, and the discourse of mainstream Taiwan literature/culture are inseparable. As a matter of fact, the indigenous authors’ writings are a fusion of the cultural, social, linguistic, and historical differences between the indigenous and the Han, the major and the minor, even between the various indigenous tribes themselves. Through the process of negotiation, the literariness of Taiwan indigenous literature reveals its fluidity.
