The purpose of this study is to explore the educationally unfavorable situation of disadvantaged students of coastal areas in Yunlin County (including Mailiao, Taisi, Sihhu and Kouhu Townships). Since the coastal areas in Yunlin County are remote and disadvantaged, the cultural stimulation to students is insufficient and the proportion of students with low academic achievement is high. Thus, this study is to understand the educational status of elementary school students of coastal areas in Yunlin County by teachers’ self-reflection on teaching dilemma, further to understand the influence of educationally unfavorable factors on disadvantaged students’ leaning. This study carries out semi-structured interview of seven teachers in coastal areas of Yunlin County to collect and analyze data concerned; a teacher is interviewed at least in a township. After the studied data are analyzed, the major results are as follows:
1.Educationally unfavorable factors for the coastal areas of Yunlin County:
(1) The family background and social and economic status of elementary school students in the coastal area of Yunlin County are major factors influencing on students’ leaning; the proportion of disadvantaged families is high; the child with multiple backgrounds has low academic achievement; lack of cultural capital of objective type is unfavorable to academic achievement. (2) The social and economic status of students’ parents is generally low and who have less concerns about children. (3) Elementary school students’ language ability is no good and inactive toward assignments. (4) Disadvantaged educational environment and lack of resources.
2.The teaching dilemma self-reflected by elementary school teachers in the coastal areas of Yunlin County:
(1)Parents do not join student’s education actively. (2) Teachers have too many administrative works to devote themselves to improve disadvantaged students’ situation. (3) Insufficient cultural stimulation to student results in disturbance of teaching. (4)Too many underachievers, teachers are unable to remedy. (5) Various activities disperse teacher’s teaching energy. (6) study-participants’ reflections on live events—teacher’s disturbance in teaching is most from family of origin.
