Through the access to how Confidence-Building Measures (CBMs) was developed and employed worldwide, this study aims to find the correlation of its theory with neorealism, neoliberalism and social constructivism. Factors, such as international environment, political situation, economical and military power, are taken into account how the thoughts and attitudes of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) have been transforming while establishing its mechanism of CBMs. Through comparative approach, the PRC’s CBMs employed in Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), as an example, is used to drive out the connotation that constructed the CBMs taken by the PRC. The above mentioned theories of international relations are used to figure out how the PRC’s CBMs were developed while China was tackling with the ASEAN and SCO.
This study finds that CBMs do correlate with the theories mentioned above. Some key factors entangled with regional interests do have different influences on the nature of the CBMs while the PRC was tackling its leverage with other members in the ASEAN as well as in the SCO. It is on this basis that this study attempts to depict the connotation of the CBMs that the PRC has taken towards its allies. This study believes that the neorealism, neoliberalism and social constructivism may provide different approaches that help to probe and predict the paradigm of the CBMs that the PRC may take towards other nations.
