Studies on Tidal Characteristics and Accuracy of Prediction around Taiwan / 台灣四周潮汐特性與預測精度分析研究

碩士 / 國立高雄海洋科技大學 / 海洋環境工程研究所 / 98 / This research makes use of tidal records around Taiwan from 1992 to 2008 to study the temporal and spatial characteristics of the four major tidal components (M2, S2, K1, O1) around Taiwan and to evaluate the accuracy of tidal prediction under varied time span of tidal record. Harmonic analysis is chosen as the tool to implement tidal data analysis and prediction.
The study results present some features of the four major tidal components around Taiwan. The amplitude of M2 and S2 in western Taiwan and Kinmen are significantly greater, while it is smaller in the northeast and the southwest coast of Taiwan. K1 and O1 are much larger at Kinmen than all other regions. On the other hand, the phase of the four major tidal components shows varied tendencies. In the northeastern, eastern and southwestern regions, M2 has similar phase while western region has about 106 degree phase difference. S2 does not have significant difference for all stations. For K1 and O1, all stations show the same periodic change, the phase shift every four years. According to the analysis of form factor, the northeastern and southwestern of Taiwan exibit mixed tide with minor diurnal effect. Hsinchu and Taichung marked as semidiurnal tide. F values at Danshuei, Jhuwei, Bozihliao and Liaoluowan are a little above 0.25 which present the semi-diurnal component is stronger than the diurnal component. Other stations are basically mixed tide mainly semi-diurnal.
Varied time span of tide predictions are performed according to different length of tidal observations to evaluate the accuracy of tidal prediction. The root mean square (RMS) is adopted to judge the accuracy. A smaller RMS value represents a higher accuracy of prediction. The results show that the accuracy of prediction is higher with longer length of tidal data.
This study has analyzed 17 years of tidal data at 35 stations around Taiwan to provide a better understanding of the tidal characteristics around Taiwan and to set a criterion for optimum tidal prediction. The results can also be used as a base for both academic research and coastal engineering projects in the future.
