Distribution and accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbonsin sediments of the ocean disposal site of Kaohsiung Harbor / 高雄港海洋棄置區沉積物多環芳香烴分佈與累積

碩士 / 國立高雄海洋科技大學 / 海洋環境工程研究所 / 98 / The main objective of this study was to understand the effect of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) on the marine life in the Kaohsiung ocean dumping area, which came from the dredging of sediments form the Kaohsiung Harbor. Furthermore, this study also discusses the distribution over time and changes in vertical concentration of PAH, thus understanding the possible sources of pollution from its composition. This study had established 3 test stations within the Kaohsiung ocean dumping area, with additional 3 background sites. In addition, this study collected surface sediments of the area between March and October of 2009, as well as core sediments in the March of 2010. After the 16 priority PAHs listed by the US Environmental Protection Agency were investigated, results showed that the seasonal average concentration of the total PAH in the sediments within the dumping area was 126 – 729 ng/g dry wt, with the concentration at the background sites averaging 126 – 245 ng/g dry wt. The concentration within the dumping area is 4-7 times higher than that in the background sites, indicating that the PAHs from the sediments mainly accumulate within the dumping area. The composition of PAHs within the sediments mainly consisted of high ring-counts (4-6 rings), with their main sources coming from the burning of gasoline and pyrolysis. This result was similar to the composition of the sediments of the Kaohsiung Harbor. The core vertical concentrations at 5 cm within the test sites of the dumping area all showed high concentration content, but there were also situations where the level of concentration decreases over depth. The overall Toxic Equivalent Quotient (TEQarrc) of PAHs of the sediments at different test sites was between 2-59 ng TEQ/g dry wt. The overall PAH content at the various sites had not exceeded the ERL value, indicating that its effect on marine life was not significant.
