The management of recreational fishing boat with passengers cruising in Kaohsiung Harbor was not in a satisfactory development for years. It is expected that with the proceeding data analyses and researches we will be developing directions and strategies of management in the future. This study is based on random sampling with passengers in Gushan Fishing Port of Kaohsiung during Dec. 2009 and Feb. 2010. Among total 319 questionnaires, 298 of them with 93.42% valid percentage are valid. The data are analyzed by using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, factor analysis, Pearson correlation, Important-Performance Analysis(IPA) and SWOT analysis. The results are as following:
1.For passengers to take recreational fishing boats cruising in Kaohsiung Harbor, the main basic factors are “enriching their lives” and “experiences of boat-cruising and fishery”. The top three recognized motivations of cruising are: “to appreciate scenery of river bank in Kaohsiung”, “to enhance relationship with relatives, classmates, co-workers and friends” and “to experience the pleasure of fishing boat cruising in Kaohsiung Harbour”.
2.The top three items that the passengers think the most important are “facilities on shore” (such as embarkation and disembarkation, public toilet or waiting area, etc.), “facilities on board” (such as safety, lighting or seats, etc.) and “activity space on board”. The top three most satisfied items are: “the professionalism of the guides on board”, “the facilities on shore” and “the facilities on board”.
3.From the review of passengers’ individual information and motivations of recreation, it appears great differences by age, education level, personal income and Kaohsiung citizenship.
4.From the review of characteristic and motivations of recreation, it also shows great differences on their motivations of recreation by times to cruise, where to get the cruise information, companions, willingness to cruise again and willingness to recommend to their relatives and friends to cruise.
5.To examine touring intentions with the importance of traveling is that some parts of them are affirmative related; otherwise, touring intentions with the satisfaction of traveling is that all of them are affirmative related.
If the owners of the fishing boats may make the best use of internal advantage and external opportunity and environments, and further correct some internal deficiencies, looking for progress to resist external challenges and explore resources of passengers, the prospect of operation of recreational fishing boat with passengers cruising in Kaohsiung Harbor is very optimistic.
Some suggestions for the owners’ consideration:
-to rebuilt the passengers waiting service booths and improve the facilities of embarkation and disembarkation.
-to plan better route of cruising and improve the passive operation mode of reservation by touring groups.
-to strengthen promotion and aiming at passengers from PRC.
Some suggestions to the government:
-to indulge in supplying assistance to touring industry and promote persistently on recreational fishing boat for cruising.
-to simplify the customs inspection for boat entrance or outward .
-to create advantages to the recreational fishing boats with passengers cruising in Kaohsiung Harbour by re-building the features of Gushan Fishing Port to attract more tourists.
