A Comparative Study on Primary Music Curriculum Standards and Music Textbooks between Taiwan and China / 臺海兩岸小學音樂課程標準與音樂教科書之比較研究

碩士 / 高雄師範大學 / 音樂學系 / 98 / The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the arts education development plans, music curriculum standards, and music textbooks between Taiwan and China. Methods employed included review of literature, content analysis, and Bereday’s method in comparative education. Arts education development plans, current music curriculum standards, and the most frequently used primary school music textbooks of Taiwan and China were examined and described. Features and differences were explored and compared, related issued were discussed to provide recommendations for future development of Taiwan’s music education.

The conclusions of this study were as followed:
I. Comparison of arts education plans between Taiwan and China
1. Both Taiwan and China advocate the autonomy of arts curriculum. Arts education curriculum design corresponds to the notion of globalization, and emphasizes lateral connections between subjects and disciplines, as well as the promotion of extracurricular activities in the arts discipline. Aesthetic values serve as the foundations for educational goals. Both countries have the demand for professional teacher training and the establishment of professional commissions.
2. Plan for a new arts education curriculum is under progress in China, but not in Taiwan.
3. Significant difference was seen in China’s emphasis on international exchange and Taiwan’s emphasis on localized cultures in terms of educational planning.
4. Both Taiwan and China have similar principles in the design and editing of teaching materials. Both stressed the integration of technology into arts education curriculum, as well as using subjective culture and localization view points as the theoretical framework for designing teaching materials.
II. A comparison of music curriculum standards between Taiwan and China
1. In terms of learning objectives, both Taiwan and China emphasize the motivation of students’ creativity and cultivation of aesthetic ability. Both countries share common educational notions such as the individuality and personal development of learners, edification of aesthetics, encouragement of creativity, local culture inheritance, and international perspectives.
2. Taiwan and China both adopt curriculum goals based on “essentialism” and “discipline-based arts education” as theoretical foundations.
3. In terms of learning content, Taiwan uses the ten fundamental capabilities as a starting point, and places emphasis on real life experience, as well as establishment of internal values and attitudes. On the bases of the fourteen content standards, China stresses the discipline attribute of music and emphasizes the integration between disciplines.
4. Within the learning content, “response” holds the largest quantity, followed by “performance”. Least content was found in the area of “composition”.

III. Comparison of music textbooks between Taiwan and China
1. In terms of physical characteristics, music textbooks by Kang Hsuan Educational Publishing Group of Taiwan has better layout, printing quality and pictorial processing than those of the textbooks by People's Education Publishing House of China.
2. Regarding the content organization, textbooks of both Taiwan and China employ “thematic approach” as the framework, and use “songs” as the core for overall teaching activities.
3. Regarding teaching material, Taiwanese textbooks contains more contents in singing and performance compare to textbooks of China; while textbooks of China contains more composition, appreciation, and other areas. The least area found in textbooks of both countries were “composition”. Taiwanese textbooks tend to place emphasis on “performance”, whereas textbooks of China stress “appreciation”.

Based on the conclusions, recommendations were proposed for music teachers, textbook publishing companies, and education authorities. Suggestions were given for further research in the area.
