碩士 / 國立屏東商業技術學院 / 經營管理研究所 / 98 / The study aims to investigate the effects of cultural distance and institutional distance on the foreign commitments of multinational corporations’ (MNCs) subsidiaries. Furthermore, this research utilizes the subsidiary’s local experience as a moderating factor to explore whether the subsidiary’s operational time can mitigate the negative impacts of cultural and institutional distances on the MNC’s foreign commitments.
This study use computer and peripheral equipment industry as the research target to examine this topic. The research sample consists of 55 MNCs, and four subsidiaries of each MNC are selected to be investigated. After eliminating the sample, which has losing data, this study comprises 169 subsidiaries, and then we utilize multiple-regression model to investigate this issue.
The empirical results show that both the cultural and institutional distances exert negative influences on the MNCs foreign commitment to their subsidiaries. Besides, using the subsidiary’s local experience as the moderating factor, the result reveals that the negative impact of institutional distance on the MNC’s foreign commitment would be mitigated. However, the moderating effect does not exist in the relationship between cultural distance and MNC’s foreign commitment. Finally, this research concludes with research and managerial implications and provides suggestions for future research.
