Abstract
Following the Opium War and the Western colonial invasion, Shanghai has rapidly become the fastest economic development city in mainland China, turning it into a birthplace of Chinese commercial art. The “Calendar Picture” was then a product under that unrest. The paintings focused on using large numbers of female images to dress in graceful and gorgeous apparels. As the apparels and dynamic appearances came in real depiction of oriental charm, they are thus greatly appreciated by the public.
As the evolution process of women’s fashion has reflected the violent turmoil of time changes, economic composition, value concept and social habits, this study has thus taken the historical background of the late Qing Dynasty as the vertical focus, and the fashion evolution process of pretty girl images in Calendar Picture and the contemporary old pictures as the horizontal focus. They are then inter-compared and summarized with the purpose to analyze the evolution process of women’s fashion in the Chinese society, and to verify that the Calendar Picture was meant to record the historical significance of contemporary women’s fashion. The study continues to explore the evolution process of feminist consciousness in an attempt to learn about the changing moods of the dressed up girls. Based on the aforesaid research motivation, the research objectives are drafted as follows:
1. To sort out the evolution of pretty girl paintings in Chinese Calendar Picture
2. To discuss the evolution of old pictures with that of pretty women images in Calendar Picture
3. To explore and reveal the feminist consciousness of pretty girl images in Calendar Picture
Based on the above objectives, the author has conducted a research and came out with the following results:
From the pretty girl images in Calendar Picture, we are able to take a glimpse of the evolution of modern Chinese women’s fashion, and it has helped us to learn about the feminist consciousness changes under that background era. The impact caused by the rise of women is a vital catalyst in women’s fashion evolution in that women have gradually changed from dressing up passively to please others to initiatively choose the makeup they like. The subtle changes therein have explained that women have begun to march towards an era to dress up to please “themselves”.
