碩士 / 國立臺中教育大學 / 社會科教育學系碩士班 / 98 / Willow River and Green River are the main rivers that flow through the city of Taichung. By knowing the changes and development of the landscape on their banks, it is possible to have a glimpse of the evolution of the old downtown area of Taichung City over the last century. The methodology of research in this article is mainly literature review, in particular in newspapers and government archives; it is supplemented by detailed field study and related information that has been gathered from sources of various kinds and further analyzed and summarized, with a view to have the authenticity of the historical data as much as possible. As the society advances, waterfront spaces in urban areas are becoming more important. Willow River and Green River has been planned and remedied by Japanese rulers, who also transplanted willow tree on their banks, which gave then Taichung City the reputation as “little Kyoto”. When Taiwan was recovered, massive immigrants cut down the willow tree along the banks of these rivers to build make-shift houses, which ruined the original landscape. At that time, people dwelling by the Willow River banks lived simple life and shared affection with one another, and along the Green River emerged the once-popular Green River Commerce Area. From 1960s on, the city government began to tear down the illegal buildings along the two rivers; this work was completed in 1987. The city government has also undertaken continuous forestation and beautification works along the banks of the two rivers, gradually restoring the original fascination of the river bank. This article makes reference to the successful remedies of Cheonggyecheon river in Seoul, Korea and Love River in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, hoping that Taichung City Government can establish a sound sewerage system with separation of rain water and wastewater as early as possible, so that the rivers remain clean and provide citizen with space for leisure. The purposes of this study are to record the changes in urban space with time and to inspire for the construction of beautiful scenery along Willow River and Green River.
