The limiting factors for algal growth in two reservoirs in southern Taiwan / 南化與曾文水庫藻類生長之限制因子探討

碩士 / 國立臺南大學 / 環境生態研究所碩士班 / 98 / Eutrophication has been a major concern for reservoirs in Taiwan. Understanding the limiting factor for algal growth is critical in managing eutrophication in these reservoirs. Major factors that may limit algal growth are nutrients, mainly nitrogen and phosphorous, and light. In this study, analysis of historical data and bioassay are used to explore nitrogen, phosphorus, and light as possible limiting factors on algal growth in Tseng-wen Reservoir and Nan-hua Reservoir in Southern Taiwan. Results showed that, both reservoirs are very suitable for phytoplankton growth due to high water temperatures and abundant sunshine. Analysis of historical data, indicated that algal biomass is not significantly correlater to nutrient levels except Tseng-wen Reservoir has shown a slight nitrogen limitation. Bioassay was conducted to further study the nutrient limitation situations. Samples of reservoir water were spiked with two different level of nitrogen and phosphorous. Results were consistent with analysis using historical data, showing no nutrient limitation except nitrogen in Tsen-wen Reservoir.
Bioassay was also conducted for the assessment of light limitation. Results indicated that a light intensity of 393 μmol/m2-s provided maximum algal growth potential in both reservoirs. Bioassay on photo periods using such a light intensity has shown that a minimum of 6-hour light exposure per day was required for the maintenance of a stable algal community. Further studies are required to integrate experimental results and in-situ observations, which can then link algal growth to light and hydraulic parameter such as euphotic depth and mixing depth of the reservoirs.
