A study of Cijin and Gushan Ferry regionalsettlement development / 旗津和鼓山兩地渡船頭地區聚落發展之研究

碩士 / 國立臺南大學 / 台灣文化研究所教學碩士班 / 98 / Both Cijin and Gushan Ferry piers located in Kaohsiung edge and formed settlements,
each Chihou mountain and Shoushan co-guardian of the port, had a similar background to
the Settlement Development. The early development of the two settlements were the main
livelihoods of fishing. Kaohsiung port in the period of natural harbor, due to Chihou in Cijin
Ferry better in boating, had the development of settlements earlier than the other side of
Gushan Ferry region Shaochuantou settlement. During the Japanese Occupation, the
Kaohsiung port construction works digging the deep Harbor mud landfilled on the east side
of the beach to Shaochuantou forming the land of Hama Sen and made the changes of
Gushan Ferry regional settlement development.
During the Japanese occupation, the construction of Kaohsiung Harbor, railway
construction, and the setting of Fishermen’s Association after Taiwan''s retrocession
increased employment rapidly on both sides of Cijin and Gushan Ferry. In addition to the
crew of the sea, the fisheries-related staff, such as the dock workers, porters, customs broker
and mending nets and sewing the box entrepreneur, also attracted large numbers of people to
come. The Fishermen’s Association set in Hama Sen of Gushan Ferry, for the sake of
geographic proximity, so increased Gushan Ferry area population and the basic material
needs of the people''s livelihood and then active market trading activities. In contrast, during
this period, although Cijin Ferry area’s major development in shipbuilding, ship breaking
and freezing industry also created many job opportunities, the crew of deep-sea fishing must
go to the shipping companies in Gushan Ferry to go fishing, so the impact is much less.
In 1975, after the construction completion, the second port of Kaohsiung harbor’s
boating condition was better than the first port, many fisheries-related industries were also
gradually shifted to Cianjhen port. Until 1984, the Fishermen’s Association moved to
Cianjhen Fishery Harbor and brought some impact to the Gushan Ferry. Since 1982, the
population of both areas were declining, and the emigration of Gushan Ferry area was more
serious, so material needs were not as before, the decline of economic activity, and the
i v
industry gradually moved out, such as financial institutions shrinking from more than 10 to
today''s 3; Global hostel had become the only one in Hama Sen Region. Compared to the
Gushan Ferry area, Cijin Ferry had been hit much smaller.
In 1967, the construction of second port in Kaohsiung harbor cut off the connection with
Cijin to the land, so access was required to rely on the ferry. In spite of the cause of
inconvenience to the residents, it became characteristics of Cijin. Combined with heritage
attractions, the preservation of tricycle around the island and beach re-planning, Cijin
developed the tourism industry and allowed Cijin retaining a large number of seafood
restaurants. On the contrary, seafood and tricycles in Gushan Hama Sen are gradually
disappearing. Until 1984, the tunnel opened and it linked Cijin to the land, that Cijin again
formed an island, on account of more convenient in transportation making the tourism
industry flourish in Cijin. However, lack of development of tourism resources in Gushan
Ferry, after the Fishermen’s Association moving out, Gushan Ferry pier became tourist’s
passing out of the land from Cijin, so the commercial development was mainly in the
restaurant by the ferry station and modern restaurants to attract students in National Sun
Yat-sen university.
The economic development in Cijin and Gushan Ferry attracted immigrants from
Penghu, Tainan Anping, Beimen and Keliao to work here. This economic development
had changed the composition of the two settlements’ population structure, as well as
religious beliefs were brought in by different groups of people from original township’s
different beliefs and developed into an independent religion and population composition.
With the instability of economic booming in recent years, some religious ceremony saved a
lot money. Nevertheless, this religion is still able to assure and get together people’s
cohesive.
